ABSTRACT
This chapter will discuss the disorders in acid-base balance most commonly presenting in the critically ill patient. Arterial blood gas analysis is a learned skill that requires knowledge of normal acid-base physiology and experience in interpreting blood gas results (Field, 2000). Although an overview of acid-base physiology will be given, a detailed discussion of the processes involved can be found in the suggested reading list.
