ABSTRACT
The future is yet to come (as a Member once solemnly informed Parliament). But indubitable though this claim is, it cannot be said to furnish the kind of specific information on which we might base our plans. What else do we really know about the future course of events? Precious little, sceptics assure us, and much less than we tend to assume. Suppose they are right: what then?
