ABSTRACT
Over its approximately eighty years of existence, jazz has achieved a presence in the culture of many lands far from its African American birthplace. Over this same period, the same technical and social developments (sound recording and broadcasting, international commerce) that aided the spread of jazz have given musics from many remote locales a vital presence in the lives of members of the U.S. jazz community.
