ABSTRACT
In 1994, applicants for a vacant position in a National Health Service hospital were sent a ‘person specification’ describing the ideal candidate as someone who could:
demonstrate sound interpersonal relationships and an awareness of the individual client’s psychological and emotional needs;
understand the need for effective verbal and nonverbal communication; and
support clients and relatives in the care environment by demonstrating empathy and understanding.
