ABSTRACT

There was a big change in Steven over the next few weeks. In the waiting room he could be seen sitting upright or standing hugging his mother. Several therapists told me their patients were mentioning this boy in the waiting room who used to look terrible but was really nice looking. The home commented he was calm for the rest of the day after coming to see me and for the next day. We agreed that the next important stage would be for me to take him to and from the therapy room. After two months I did this, feeling extremely frightened the first time. However, he managed then and ever after apart from a regression following the death of his sister. The triumph Steven and I felt at our both managing the fear of his violence was visible in the proud way he hugged his mother and worker on his arrival back after going it alone with me. His mother even said, ‘Well done, you brave boy’.
