ABSTRACT

In the current climate of control and increased accountability, writing classrooms have become increasingly formulaic as teachers look for shortcuts to compact instruction in order to meet outcomes. Time for writing is being squeezed out to make way for the multitude of curriculum areas needing more time in an overcrowded instructional day. Many teachers feel they no longer have time to allow students to linger with a piece of writing, to experiment, or to pursue genres of their interest to any extent. The writing curriculum is becoming a cover-it checklist of measurable skills.
