ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the role of design in reclaiming learning about writing. While today's writers (adults and children) are immersed in multimodal texts, and clamor for more interactive and innovative digital formats for play and learning, we describe what happened when a class of second graders was afforded the opportunity to learn about print books in a new way — as objects of art they could design. Our observations and analysis of these events led us to think about the role of design in the writing process and how learning to design helped children reclaim their voices as writers.
