ABSTRACT

This chapter explores ecofeminist theory and its critique of mainstream Western ideologies about women and nature. It begins by outlining how ecofeminism can be grouped into two broad categories. It explores each in turn, paying attention, en route, to the divisive issue of essentialism. It then examines ecofeminist political activism, before identifying the ways in which ecofeminism is significant for the development of European politics. The conclusion points to the weaknesses of ecofeminism, but also shows how it presents a very refreshing challenge for feminist analysis and politics.
