ABSTRACT

As is the case with all curricula, the National Curriculum in England and Wales is intended to be more than the sum of its parts. It is hoped that the collective fulfilment of subject based requirements will mean that a number of overlying aims relating to the curriculum ‘as a whole’ are addressed and ‘added value’ in relation to learning thereby achieved. The latest revision of the National Curriculum for Physical Education in England (DfEE/QCA, 1999a) stressed that teachers in all subject areas should be aware of and actively seek to advance:
