ABSTRACT
Whether we are talking about the United States, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Britain, or other European countries, the subject of immigration immediately brings forth many ideological prejudices and suspicions. It triggers very polarized visions of its consequences for the country of immigration. 2 Many observers see it as an exclusively positive phenomenon that enriches the fabric of the nation, is economically unavoidable, and should be supported whatever the social costs. In France, the formula used is that “immigration is a chance for the country.” A common approach is to portray those who question the positive benefi ts of massive immigration as racist and xenophobic. The opponents to immigration tend to stress the dangers of uncontrolled immigration and the political, cultural, economic, and social challenges of a multicultural society.
