ABSTRACT

Few areas of public policy are subject to greater misrepresentation in public and political discourse yet are more influenced by public opinion than international migration. Despite the communications revolution, many remain poorly informed about the scale, scope, and socioeconomic context of migration. Communicating effectively about migration is critical, since managing migration also implies managing how migrants are perceived in society. From our perspective at the International Organization for Migration (IOM)—the world’s leading intergovernmental organization for migration management and migrant rights—accurately informing relevant stakeholders and the wider public about migration may be the single most important policy tool in all societies faced with increasing diversity.
