ABSTRACT

On practically every issue that came before Tedder as ‘Chief Aunt Sally’, he and Sir John Slessor (Air Member for Personnel since April 1945) were agreed. When Tedder chose to retire – unlike his successors, he had not been appointed for a fixed term – Jack Slessor, seven years younger, would be widely regarded as the natural successor. At first, it seems, Tedder accepted that view, but sadly for both men he changed his mind during 1947.
