ABSTRACT

“I claimed the title page of the Frauen-Zeitung, published on ENLIST WOMEN CITIZENS IN the realm of freedom,” pro 21 April 1849 in Meissen by the 30-year-old Louise Otto. Declaring that “Freedom is indivisible,” Otto began by asserting:

The history of all times and especially of today teaches us that those who do not think about themselves will be forgotten! That is what I wrote in May 1848, when I aimed my words at the men in Saxony who were concerned with the question of labor. Speaking for my sisters, I thus admonished them to think of poor women workers, so that they not be forgotten. and that is why I am editing a women's newspaper. In the midst of the great upheavals in which we all find ourselves, women will be forgotten if they do not think about themselves!
