ABSTRACT
SUFFRAGE MOVEMENT, WOMEN'S RIGHTS movement, femin- ism—not one of these terms by itself offers a precise definition of the uneven but sustained progress of American women toward social and political emancipation in the 19th century. None can fully represent the century-long evolution of that permanent tension between sexual equality and male hegemony.
