ABSTRACT

TURKISH IMMIGRATION INTO FRANCE is a relatively recent phenomenon and is characterized by emphasis on family and community solidarity. Immigration statistics show that in 1964 there were a mere 111 Turkish workers in France, whereas in 1992 there were some 250,000. The first Turkish applicants for emigration to Europe were headed primarily for Germany. A bilateral agreement signed by the two nations in 1961 made the Federal Republic of Germany the first target of emigration; today some 1.8 million Turkish immigrants are settled in Germany. Turkish nationals are the immigrant group that is the most widely spread across Europe. Monographs on their modes of settlement in different countries attest to a degree of social insularity and community structures that limit the relationships that Turkish families maintain with the surrounding society.
