ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to take stock of current theorizing about agencies, principally as that theorizing has been done within the covers of this book, but also, necessarily, with some references to the wider literature. ‘To take stock’ is a fairly imprecise (though perhaps for that reason often-used) phrase. Here I will give it the following more specific meanings:

• To review how the contributing authors have used theory – in particular, which theories have they used, and for what purposes?
