ABSTRACT

Education has provided a fertile and long-standing area for the application of psychology, arguably constituting the first coherent area of application with, for example, Witmer’s clinic in the USA and Burt’s professional work in the UK in the early twentieth century. Furthermore, the social, political and educational tasks of the education system have been widely served by psychology and psychologists. Although the relationship is, on the face of it, straightforward, I will argue that there are complexities and difficulties. However, I have no doubt that there is a wide field open for psychology in education, as indeed continues to be demonstrated by research and practice.
