KERMODE, FRANK (1919-2010) Author and editor of over 40 books, Frank Kermode was an extremely versatile British critic and writer, whose work played a signi cant role in shaping modern literature courses worldwide. His early work demonstrates his interest in the literary canon and includes books and essays on, among others, Spenser (1965), Donne (1957), Milton (1960) and, most notably, William Shakespeare, about whom Kermode would write throughout his career. This interest in the literary canon and on literary value is the subject of much of Kermode’s work, including History and Value (1988) and his book Pleasure and Change: The Aesthetics of Canon (2004).
