ABSTRACT
For 70 years, communist totalitarianism shielded from view much of Russia’s defence developments, which required the creation of Sovietology as a new field of political and analytical enquiry. Sovietology was a difficult craft because it involved making assumptions about a system that depended on secrecy and isolation for survival. Consequently, Sovietologists had to generate knowledge by extrapolating on scarce and incomplete information.
