ABSTRACT
This chapter analyses the responses of labour leaders to the privatization of stateowned enterprises in Mexico. It is argued that democratization has a substantial impact on the ability of trade unions to respond to the challenges posed by globalization. The degree of union democracy and the partisan links of union leaders provide additional insights that are necessary for a more complete understanding of the outcomes for organized labour in liberalizing economies.
