ABSTRACT

In this chapter, Geisler and Grice introduce the 10 basic principles that characterize engaging user experience and place them in the context of user-centered traditions. With a focus on the user, on design, and on engagement, the principles provide the foundation for designing user experiences rich in communication and interaction. This chapter also introduces the research through which the basic principles were developed. Five projects were taken through an iterative design process, coordinated and communicated through a common seminar and a common methodology. The introduction closes with an overview of the organization of this book and some suggestions of how it could be used.
