ABSTRACT

The Connected Kids information system and galleries (https://connectedkids.rpi.edu/index.php/" xmlns:xlink="https://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">https://connectedkids.rpi.edu/index.php/) afford opportunities for experiments in several aspects of designing engaging web-based communication, from traditional approaches to usability (Brinck, Gergle, & Wood, 2002, pp. 1–11; Nielsen, 1993, pp. 26–37) through newer concepts in experience design (Bolter & Gromala, 2003, pp. 2–7, 48–56, 62–69; Norman, 2004, pp. 35–60; Shedroff, 2001, pp. 2–11) to recent developments in user-generated content (Bruns, 2008, pp. 9–36, 69–258; Tapscott & Williams, 2006, pp. 34–64) and the special problems associated with the public sharing of creative content (Bruns, 2008, pp. 259–288; Lessig, 2006, pp. 169–232), especially content by and for children and teens. In addition, the galleries pose challenges for future experiments in media remix and convergence and digital storytelling across multiple platforms and multiple media forms (Friedlander, 2008; Jenkins, 2006, pp. 1–24; Lessig, 2008, pp. 23–83; Miller, 2008, pp. 41–68, 227–239; Nightingale, 2007).
