ABSTRACT

Users of many web-based communications browse quickly for information. If they can't find something interesting, they move on. Consequently, it is important for designers to help users make a connection. This chapter focuses on narrative or storytelling as a powerful design element that helps users engage. Search and her team describe the use of narratives in two examples of cross-cultural communication, where making a connection can be difficult, and they suggest how to create effective narratives that engage the user.
