ABSTRACT
Research on engaging web-based communication suggests that users value and seek out interactions with other users. To design engaging communication, then, we need to focus on supporting interactions among users, creating opportunities for them to interact with one another, share what they create, and develop protocols to support those interactions. This chapter reports on work that suggests that, even in the context of distance learning, students will go to great lengths to establish and maintain interactions with other students.
