ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the role of cooperatives in rural development. Starting with examples from India, we discuss ‘formal’ cooperatives (established under official regulatory
frameworks), ‘informal’ cooperation (customary methods of pooling labour, savings, etc.), and the importance of cooperatives in the ‘new social economy’. What factors cause these varied organizations to succeed or fail, and what benefits accrue to the poor if they succeed?
