ABSTRACT

As we have seen in Chapter 3, there is a considerable body of literature on the interface between the work and non-work domains. Much of this research has focused on the work-family interface and has generally subscribed to a 'role scarcity' or negative spillover approach to the interaction of the work and family domains. As a result, much of the literature has focused on work-family conflict. Therefore, we will begin this chapter with a review of the conceptualization and measurement of work-family conflict, Then we will discuss recent developments in conceptualizing and measuring the work-family interface from a positive spillover or work-family facilitation perspective. After having considered both work-family conflict and work-family facilitation, we conclude the chapter with a discussion of conceptualizations of work-family fit and balance, and the resultant measurement and methodological issues associated with examining balance.
