ABSTRACT
In the late 1960s, on my first academic appointment, I was assigned the task of launching a course in industrial sociology. The best way of learning a new subject, I was assured, is to teach it; and indeed, after a crash programme digesting the available literature I felt confident that I had a clear enough idea what it was all about. (Whether my students thought the same it is safer not to speculate.)
