ABSTRACT
In postcolonial studies, the emphasis has been on deconstructing colonial historiography and Orientalist aesthetics by writing back. What has been less studied is how postcolonial literature re-uses indigenous traditional genres-oral and written-to address contemporary issues. Literature of formerly colonized people is concerned with decolonization, but it is equally concerned with its own legacy and how to recycle its heritage, incorporating a modern and humanistic vision.
