ABSTRACT
This chapter
introduces the concept of the workshop approach for the development of literacy skills
describes key factors which will predict success in reading and writing and which can be identified in the early years
describes situations where contextual assessment can yield practical information which can inform planning decisions
explains what happens in a workshop session to remove barriers and support learning
highlights the three core elements in workshop sessions: phonological awareness, semantic and syntactic knowledge, reading and responding to texts
acknowledges the contribution of technology in supporting learning and providing scope for creativity.
