ABSTRACT
The management of solid waste is one of the United States’ most protracted sustainability concerns. Making room for the 250 million tons of solid waste generated per year is a serious issue. 1 In addition, landfills account for over one-quarter of methane gas emissions—one of the most potent of the greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming. Land use, energy, and environmental policies are challenging current disposal methods.
