ABSTRACT
On 2 August 1964 North Vietnamese torpedo boats attacked US warships in the Gulf of Tonkin. The US responded on 5 August by bombing North Vietnam. These developments signalled a worsening of the Vietnam conflict and an escalation of US involvement there. That same day Beijing proposed to Hanoi that they collaborate more closely to meet the American threat.
