ABSTRACT

Northern Ireland remains one of the richest environments in the world in which one is able to conduct research on different aspects of terrorism and counterterrorism. Because of its location, accessibility, offi cial language and comfort, it remains one of the most over-researched and over-studied places on the planet. 1 Nonetheless, as was experienced by the author, there still exist interesting Northern Irish or Irish research avenues for researchers with specialization in terrorism studies. It is an ideal place for either classical or critical terrorism research in which one could focus on different aspects of the Northern Irish Troubles-their longevity, intensity, actors, their composition, splits, competition between them, anti-or pro-state terrorism, different counterterrorism strategies, concepts of terrorism, paramilitarism, insurgency and criminality, and perhaps fi nally, how the confl ict ended and what happened to the main protagonists.
