ABSTRACT

In principle, there is no difference between carrying out research into terrorism and counter terrorism (CT) than there is to undertaking research within other fi elds in the social sciences. The best research data is still data derived from primary sources and in many circumstances, the best (if not the only) way primary research data can be obtained is by interviewing individuals who are in a position to provide it. Subjects who could potentially be interviewed fall into two broad but very distinct categories, those involved in terrorism itself and those involved in countering it. Interviewing terrorists or others linked to terrorism when they are ‘in the fi eld’ is an inherently risky business and the task should not be undertaken lightly by anyone. At the very least, it requires serious thought and the assistance and support of others who have relevant experience and expertise.
