Since the Asian financial crisis erupted in 1997, a number of people including economists, journalists and politicians have expounded many explanations and theories of the causes of the crisis. However, there has been no consensus, and each individual analyst tends to explain the causes of the Asian crisis, subscribing exclusively to one of the explanatory categories. These people can be categorized into four groups.
