ABSTRACT
In writing this presentation, I wondered what I could possibly offer to such an august group. Clearly you all know the scientific issues that bring us together at this conference. In fact, as a science journalist, I have often cited the work of many of the speakers in my own writing. In so doing, I have been astounded at the clarity, the vision, and the courage that many of you have shown over the years. So, since the science is well covered, I have the opportunity to address some of the broader societal issues — the kind that are often left out of academic gatherings.
