ABSTRACT

This chapter examines all aspects of hate crime in sport, in the United Kingdom (UK) and worldwide, and considers ways of tackling hate crime by looking at the role of sports authorities and police and prosecutors. Sportsmen have appeared in court and been convicted of assaults on other players, whilst others for not dissimilar incidents have been dealt with by the sport’s disciplinary body. The UK has considerable legislation that covers hate crimes, all of which applies equally to sport. In order to consider an international approach to hate crime, two specific sports are considered International Cricket Council and, International Rugby Board, in each case looking at the regulations and at specific incidents. Many sports bodies have issued guidance to their sportsmen and women, most notably the British Olympic Association before the London Games, and the Football Association before the start of the 2012/13 season.
