ABSTRACT

Drawing on the empirical evidence provided by collective bargaining agreements in four countries (Croatia, Hungary, Spain and the UK), this chapter details the pay equity effects of a rising statutory minimum wage in a low-wage, female-dominated sector. Retail is considered one of the traditional tertiary sectors, but the organisation of the industry has been changing in recent years, with a growing market share enjoyed by leading domestic and multinational chains, often at the expense of smaller retailers. This generates a mix of approaches towards work organisation and engagement with trade unions, resulting in a relatively fragmented sector and diverse responses to the minimum wage.
