ABSTRACT

The interrelationship between the dual wage-setting institutions of minimum wages and collective bargaining is complex, multilayered and differentiated across countries. Moreover, as the detailed empirical analysis in Part Two of this book demonstrates, there is a wide heterogeneity of patterns within countries as a result of varying practices and experiences at sector, region and company levels. In this chapter, we set out the key building blocks for our empirical analysis by identifying five types of intersections between minimum wage rules and collective bargaining strategies and practices, as well as interpreting the evidence of diverse modes of government intervention in adjusting the value of the minimum wage.
