ABSTRACT

The original ideal in eighteenth-century Britain, which was not practiced very well and so America’s leadership class at the time of the Revolution thought they would practice what Britain’s leaders only preached, thus America would have the true British gentlemen, was that political parties were a necessary evil. That was why Britain had two major political parties, the Whigs (like America’s Republicans, led by big business, by their standards) and the Tories (like America’s Democrats, led by the professional classes and those influenced by high culture), for the same reason they had two teams on the field in sporting contests and not five or six. It led to orderly competition, hopefully following the rules of sportsmanship. America has followed this tradition even to this day.
