ABSTRACT

Career is an overarching concept that comprises an individual's work-related experiences over time, and links individuals and society. Long considered a moving perspective (Hughes 1958), the career concept continues to evolve despite a marked lack of unity among career scholars about exact definitions (Arthur 2008). Traditional notions of career stem from the dominance of organisations in the twentieth century, giving rise to the normative context for career and its development. A stable predictable environment made it easy for people working within organisations to organise work to achieve specific goals and simultaneously enable career advancement to more senior positions through promotions and in an upward linear trajectory (Etzioni 1964).
