ABSTRACT

The International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA, hereinafter IT or Treaty) is an international agreement dealing with plant genetic resources for food and agriculture. The Treaty was adopted in November 2001 by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Conference 2 after seven years of negotiations and came into force on 29 June 2004, 90 days after 40 governments had ratified it. 3 It is legally binding upon ratification and is in accordance with the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
