ABSTRACT
This chapter focuses on comparative and international perspectives on citizenship education, or civic education as it is sometimes described internationally. It begins by defining what is meant by ‘comparative’ and ‘international’ perspectives in education and considering the scope of such perspectives on citizenship education. It then sets out some of the key influences on how and why such perspectives are increasingly being sought on citizenship education. This is followed by a short overview of the main ways in which such perspectives are being obtained. The chapter concludes with a review of some of the current debates concerning comparative and international perspectives on citizenship education. The chapter aims to provide a concise introduction to a vibrant and fast-growing dimension of citizenship education. It is hoped that this will enable the reader to explore such perspectives further.
