ABSTRACT

There is a growing need for appropriate facilities for children with autism. At present in the UK there are approximately three autistic children for every specialist place available and this has led to greater efforts by the authorities to include more children in schools other than those catering specifi cally for their needs. The philosophy of inclusion has much to commend it, but if it is to work for the benefi t of children with autism, it is essential that the nature of the disability is understood and that the curriculum on offer is able to be accessed by them.
