ABSTRACT

We walked out of the mill after 5 p.m. It had been a long day. Yesterday, when I was informed that we ought to be at the mill at 7 a.m., I supposed it was a joke. It wasn’t. Engineer X told me that the working days at the customers’ mills are typically long. During these days he learns a lot not only about his own product but also about the chemical processes of pulp production. On the other hand, abundant ‘free time’ is unavoidable because the changes made in the optimisation software in the morning are not visible in the results of the production process until the next evening. Engineer X could do the needed configurations of the software more efficiently through remote connection from his home office 200 miles away. In any case it is frustrating to be weeks away from home.
