ABSTRACT

In 1994, San Francisco voters adopted a ballot measure equalizing the treatment of domestic partners and spouses in the City's pension plan. And on the national level, since 1982 a number of employers-governments, universities, private nonprofit organizations and private for-profit firms-have extended benefits to the domestic partners of their employees. Usually, these domestic partner benefits have included health insurance and certain other privileges, such as the right to use facilities like a gymnasium or library provided by the employer. The health insurance coverage is usually

extended to children of the partner as well. l To date, a substantial percentage of the individuals added have been children, a fact that is helpful in convincing people to support these benefits.
