ABSTRACT
When one million Rwandan refugees flooded into Zaire in July and August of 1994, many young women crossed the border as war booty. The Rwandan army, running from the rebel advance, captured young women and forced them along, threatening to kill them if they did not join the mass exodus. 1 It was many months before the United Nations and its partner agencies providing relief in the camps realized that so many women had been raped and forced into “marriages” during the Rwandan genocide.
