ABSTRACT

Kazakstan strongly supports strengthening nonproliferation measures worldwide, especially nuclear nonproliferation. This problem is especially close to Kazakstan, which in the past has adopted cardinal decisions in the field of nuclear policy. Kazakstan was the first country in the world to shut down an active nuclear test site and in addition was the first state to ratify START-1. Kazakstan welcomes the interests of the international community in working together with the former Soviet countries of Belarus, Kazakstan, and Ukraine, all of which have fulfilled their commitment to withdraw all nuclear warheads from their territory. This is really a historical step toward a sincere and large reduction of the nuclear threat and the creation of a unified security space in the former Soviet region.
