Traditionally, economists have played a prominent role in public debate in Sweden: many are interviewed on radio and television, contributing to the daily press, magazines and books, and functioning as experts for government inquiries and commissions.1 Economists in Sweden have probably more influence than any other category of social scientist in Swedish public debate. In other countries there is usually a wider gulf between academically active economists and the world of politics and the media.2
