ABSTRACT

Sandy has been a middle grades teacher for twenty-five years now, and has spent most of her time in the same classroom, in the same building, in the same community. Sandy doesn't complain; she doesn't rock the boat; and, sadly, she also doesn't contribute much anymore. She is on time for school each day to meet her classes and consistently turns in the required forms and paperwork on time. She has an endowed chair in the lounge that new teachers are warned about early in the year so they don't accidentally invade her turf before school or during lunch. Sandy's planbook isn't laminated, yet, but each year she adds fewer new lessons or units and relies more heavily on what has worked in the past. Sandy attends the required professional development sessions sponsored by her district and school, but she uses the time to get some of her unending paperwork done. She's heard it all before anyway.
