ABSTRACT

In the year 2000 we celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR). What an extraordinary moment it is! The College-Institute is the oldest institution of higher Jewish learning in North America and the Western Hemisphere. Its graduates, faculty, and administration have been leaders in the world of Jewish scholarship and in determining the vision, aspirations, dreams, and reality of Progressive/Reform/Liberal Judaism throughout the world. Modern Judaism and Jewish scholarship are interlinked with HUC-JIR. As we enter the period of maturity and continuing growth, it is time to take stock of Reform Judaism and its achievements, as well as look to the new challenges of the present and future. I address the following comments, based on my address to the Central Conference of American Rabbis in 1987, primarily to the community of rabbis of which I am a part.
